Keyhole Surgery

We are pleased to now be able to offer Laparoscopic or keyhole surgery for dogs over 10 kg, for procedures such as  neutering (spaying)  female dogs , removal of retained testicles in male dogs and obtaining liver biopsies.

Here at Young Vets, we like to be able to provide owners with choice in pet care and treatment where-ever possible, whilst continuing to maintain the highest level of care and service for your pet. We recommend Keyhole surgery for large or deep-chested breeds such as Boxers, Labradors, and German Shepherds, as well as very active dogs.

Keyhole surgery requires specialised equipment, additional maintenance costs and a higher level of surgical expertise meaning the cost is higher, but the benefits to your pet can include >

  • Smaller wounds ( the incisions required are normally only around 1cm)
  • Quicker recovery time post surgery – meaning young dogs won’t miss many Puppy School classes.
  • Reduced post-operative pain
  • Minimal scarring.
  • Reduced chance of post-operative infection due to minimal sized surgical sites.
  • During keyhole surgery, routinely the ovaries are removed, whereas during a routine surgical  spey,  your pets’ womb and ovaries  are usually removed. Numerous medical studies have shown that there is no need to remove a healthy womb during keyhole surgery.
